Chitwan national park is the place to experience the subtropical wilderness of Nepal in close proximity, and makes for a vastly different experience compared to Kathmandu’s historical attractions or other trekking routes. International and domestic tourists come here to see diverse wildlife up close on safaris and day excursions. Tours from the lodges take visitors out into the park, eitheron foot, or more often, on elephants for close-up views of the animals. The park is home to one-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur (buffalo) deer, and many other creatures. Crocodiles inhabit the rivers and streams but are rarely seen. More than 500 species of birds also make Chitwan a paradise for ornithologists.
